HE NINTH Annual du Maurier Ltd. International Jazz Festival Vancouver owns local music venues June 24 Michael Becker RECORD REVIEW The festival is a feast for the senses and is one of those unique events that makes living in the city an enriching experience. This year music buffs can look forward to a staggering 800 musi- cians appearing at 22 venues throughout Vancouver. ’ As in past years, the festival remains accessible to all, bracket- ed as it is by a free two-day street festival in Gastown and a tree two-day string of outdoor shows at the Plaza of Nations site. We can thank the people at the Coastal Jazz and Blues Society, Westcan Jazz Association (the Canadian jazz . festival network) and their corpo- rate sponsors (du Maurier, Air Canada and Volkswagen Canada) for bringing together the yearly package. The festival has been instrumental in advancing the careers of fine young Canadian jazz artists. Many have come from Vancouver. ; The festival opens with a dou- ble bill at 8 p.m. on Friday, June 24 at the Orpheum Theatre fea- turing jazz vocalist and pianist Shirley Horn, working in a trio format.
