histler wonder wanes OW THAT the ski season is over, | thought I'd doa round-up, of sorts, on Whistler ‘92-’93. Louise Aird BRIGHT LIGHTS Spent too much time there this year. From now on, it’s one weekend per season. Not only has it fost its cachet, but it’s impossible to work there, there's a limit to the amount of beer one can consume, and, as my skiing abilities decline with the advance of my years, | find flying down Blackcomb on my face rather tedious. | will now concentrate on cross-country skiing on the North Shore mountains. It’s much more practical, and a whole lot cheaper — | don’t think a cappuccino costs $5 at Grouse. Finances played a part in demographic changes at Whistler this year and, I’m told, the future could look brighter. Ofticially, no one admits it, but a Whistler businessman told me that he believes that single women and middle-income families can no longer afford to ski there. | guess the thing to remember is that every gravy train has a caboose. Socially, not-a lot changes from year to year. I noted that Blackcomb staff members are more polite than they used to be. Presumably, their employer had them take a course of some kind. Unless you're a Whistler resi- dent, the Longhorn is no longer the place to be seen apres ski — it has been usurped by the deck at Monk McQueen’s. Monk's wins the Lamenosity Award for worst slogans — it’s not even grammatically correct. Servers wear T-shirts reading “Just because I slept with you, doesn’t mean I'll ski with you.” Please. . . There were lots of corporate NORTH VAN'S Nancy Greene, sporting a T-shirt designed by Ken Westman. Early Bird Specials PATS A f RESTAURANT races this year — } went to Featherstone & Co.’s 11th Annual Mouton Cadet Spring Festival, which was a huge success, raising $2,000 for the Dave Murray Foundation and $5,000 for the Canadian National Ski Team. The festival started with a food and wine tasting at the Delta, for which 300 people showed. | spoke with North Van’s Nancy Greene, who was sporting a T-shirt ’ designed by artist Ken Westman, who'd donated the design to help taise money for the Whistler and Blackcomb Ski Club. Featherstone also hosted the Mouton Cadet Restaurant Race, in which 77 teams participated. Rock-101 CFMI won the media division race, Umberto’s II Caminetto won the Whistler divi- sion race and North Van's Earl's Tin Palace, consisting of Kim Taylor, Chris Rollet and Kevin Wallace, won the Vancouver divi- sion race (they each won $250 and a slew of promotional ites). Other North Shorites spotted over the season included unofficial Whistler social directors Brian Petherbridge and Don Wood, of North Van's Coastal Mountain Water; the Avalon’s Ken Hut- chinson with BCTV’s Pamela id BRIAN PETHERBRIDGE (left) and Don Woed of North Van- couver’s Coastal Mountain Water, unofficial social directors at Whistler. Introducing Cameron Miller to Dundarave Martin; and North Van's Anna Kovecses, who had just completed her tenure as a seasonal Blackcomb employee and is now looking for something new, The hottest gossip from Whistler this year comes from an executive tied to the Richard Gere film In- tersection, now shooting here. He reports that Harry Moll’s Whistler cabin has been fully used in recent weeks — by Vancouver stock broker/playboy Frank Anderson and, of all people, ac- tress Sharon Stone. The two met one evening when Anderson drove up to II Giardino in his Ferrari at the same time that Stone arrived in her limo. She made a fuss over his car, he lent it to her for the weekend, and then he offered to take her skiing. What a guy. Yo, Frank — wise up. Stone’s engaged to/living with Bill Mac- Donald, the producer of her just- released film Sliver, (Frank will never work in Hollywood again.) Worse, she kisses and tells — gives details, in fact. We all know that she'd prefer a dirt sandwich to Dwight Yoakam, but Frank, remember that another ex, actor Hart Bochner, refers to her as “the anti-Christ.” Cameron comes to our salon from Toronto.
