Myth of water shortage misled Lower Mainland Dear Editor: The people of the Greater Van- couver Regional District (GVRD) -have been subjected to lengthy and severe harassment this sum- * mer in which che main theme, as trumpeted by the GVRD and its * spokesmen, is that we are short of __ water must couserve our This theme is a faischood. The Lower Mainland is not now short _of water, never has been, and will ‘not be in the future, at least ‘within the next several hundred To say tivat an area is short of "water whea it has, running right “through its midst, one of the large rivers of the world — “The Mighty Fraser’? — is a nonsensical :. 'gtatement which should bring a ‘+. blush to the cheeks of those who have been using it as an excuse for . what some imight consider to be the lamentable lack of vision in ‘development and management of ‘the precious water resource which . is available to us. ‘There is hardly a city in the world which would not count tself fortunate to have a, similar checked through its environs? They ‘would rightly believe the millenium to .have arrived and ‘effrontery. to say we are short of water.’ We'do not draw.on the Fraser River for our. municipal supplies because we have always had, for fl the years we have lived in this lovely. green and fertile land, op- ticnal sources wo water, more cheaply. developed, transmitt and; distributed to our residents and industries... «i Some. people” even think that cheap. water is of 2 superior ality to what might be obtained ‘rom the Fraser. Perhaps it is, but the’ Fraser: River waters, properly treated, could supply water of su- perior quality 100. one-half: "of one per cent of ihe of the Fraser to sup- "i litres per day that Of course there are some measures we should introduce to curb profligate waste of water. Certainly the most effective of these would be to meter every litre of water taken from the system and charge the same [air unit rate to all consumers. This matter of water supply is a serious concern which ought not to be left to the back-room delib- erations of a group of managers with tunnel vision A great deal remains to be ex- amined about the cost and meth- odology of obtaining the water supply we could and should be able to enjoy: what our options are, and how the development of our water resources should be un- dertaken for the next century. Perhaps our provincial govern- ment could undertake to establish an investigatory body to, first of all, hear publicly what the people of the area want in the way of water availability, through a series of public meetings. A public enquiry is the best way of opening the floodgates to an expression of public cencern and dissatisfaction about our water systems that is already very evi- Retirement Dear Editor: * Mr. Bannerman, in his col- umn of Sept. 6, made the fol- lowing mistake: **Chuck Cook has announced his retirement.”* As Mark Twain once said, “the reports of his death were premature.”” Mr. Bannerman, to put it bluntly, lied! All he had to do was make one. phone cali to check his facts.and learn that I have not aniiounced my retirement or any such thing. He also stated that Kim Campbell, as a result, was looking seriously at- running in North Vancouver because she might lose in Vancouver Cen- tre. Another falsehood. Kim Campbell told me this morning she is not running in Quadra or North Vancouver or anywhere else but in Vancouver Centre. She will live or die in Vancouver Centre. Another totai lie! dent among the people of the Lower Mainland area. This should be followed by an over-all study of how these desires could best be achieved in an eco- nomic and effective way. Finally, when these aims and objectives have been settled, the © GVRD and the GVWD could be set the task of devising a new plan to supply the people of this rich _and fertile area with the copious - amounts of water that are so easi- ily and cheaply within our reach. We should not accept the fallacy that we are short of water in this abundantly endowed land. We should look to defining what we need and what we want and decide how far we want to go in achieving a generous supply of the - best water for everyone at a fair price. This is the worth-while ideal that needs to be beaten into the — hot waterlogged — but sere and dried-out brains of those who should know better than to try to mislead the people of the Lower Mainland into thinking we have a water shortage. Keith A. Henry West Vancouver report false Another case where one phone call would have given him the correct facts. . Gary is too good a journalist not to know that making such bold, flat statements is some- ‘thing less than honest journal- ism. An outrageous opinion in his column is always acceptable because it is an opinion, and anyone reading it knows it is Mr. Bannerman’s thought and not ‘‘fact.”’ What bothers me the most is that no one in an editor’s chair bothered to question the “‘in- correct facts’? or lies Gary wrote in his column. -Gary’s credibility is suspect after this, but more important, so is the credibility of the North Shore News. If I cannot believe ‘‘facts’’ reported in the North Shore News, what can I believe?
