municating Without Bias, a 26-page refer-
ence. booklet for government . employees.
“Whe: publication is simed at eliminating
‘ gexist language; it is also the basis for the
. ReW. government language of the pleasant.
‘Wtincludes . such terms as sports: en-
thusiast.to replace sportsman, angler to

replace: fisherman aud drafter to replace

areftsmen.
The booklet. Speaks : its own language,

‘replace Oldspeak so that

which is the aim of the NDP government:
its first step on the road io creating what
George Orwell’s book 1984 called
Newspeak.

In 1984, Newspeak was launched to
“a heretical
thought...should be literally unthinkable,
at feast so far as thought is dependent on
words.”’

And thought is dependent upon words.
Tine NDP hopes through its NDPspeak to

‘ecase sexist thought from the minds of

#.C. residents. Along the way attempts
might also be made to erase heretical
thoughts about the government by affixing
such unpleasant terms as deficit with
pleasant: new titles so that we shall all be
mired in a ‘“‘gender inclusive’ swamp of
foggy thinking.

help. Along with B.C.’s Mike
Harcourt and the other premiers
of ‘‘outer Canada’ he meekly
caved in after all to wily Robert
Bourassa and Quebec’s honorary
co-premier, Prime Minister Brian
Mulroney.

In the patriotically emotional
pressure cooker operated once
again by Mulroney, they settled
for a “‘Double-E" Senate: Equal
and Elected (except in Quebec,
which will nominate Senators) —
period.

But Effective? The precise op-
posite. As protection for ‘‘outer
Canada’’ interests against the
overwhelming parliamentary clout
of Quebec and Ontario, it will be
even less effective than the present
appointed Senate.

With 62 Senators (six per pro-
vince and two from the Ter-
ritories) it is two-fifths smaller
than today’s 104-member
chamber, Meanwhile, Quebec and
Ontario are compensated with 18
extra Commons seats each —
B.C. and Alberta getting an extra
four and two. MPs respectively.

So the Commions swells to 337 ©
members from today’s 295 —
86% of the increase gained by the
selfsame central Canada whose
