the threat of nuclear war between
the superpowers to ecological
disaster around the world, from
riots in the streets of Eastern Euro-
pean cities to conflicts among na-
tions in the Persian Gulf, from
bruta!, ideologically motivated at-
tacks on innocent victims caugnt
in the midst of civil wars to the
unnecessary starvation of millions
in Third World countries.

other crises, it is difficult to Jive a
life of sustained happiness, cr to
justify it even if it were possible.

Some people, however, are
capable of a more or less joyful
existence, and do so by ignoring
or rationalizing the dire preblems
in front of their noses.

ed a strategy of recovering their

senses, so to speak, of retrieving
the spirit that has been so
unceremoniously ejected.

Mary Frances Tuck inay be one
of those fortunate individuals. Her
art work, currently on view at the
gallery which bears the name of its
owner, former West Vancouver
resident Diane Farris, would seem
to testify to this fact.

It has absolutely nothing to do
with crises of any kind, or the fears
and anxieties created by them. On
the contrary, it is most emphatical-
ly the art of celebration.

Tuck creates scenes of ‘“‘en-
chanting domesticity,” as it is
called in the press release for this
exhibit. Like her mentor, Henri
Matisse, one of the prime movers
of 20th century art, she paints or-
dinary objects in her immediate
surroundings, but with a zest that
