30 - Wednesday, October 17, 1990 — North Shore News Henry Miller flick captures 1930s Paris Henry & June *** (Universal) Rated R (et the Royal! Centre) HIS IS more like it — bawdy accounts in- stead of body counts. Based on the steamy journals of Anais Nin, Henry and june vibrantly captures the Parisian back alleys frequented by strugg!- ing artists and eccentrics during 1931. Anais (Maria de Medeiros) is drawn to unpublished American author Henry Miller (Fred Ward) for his talent, intellect and his crude zest for life. Nin enters his world to offer encouragement for his work in progress, Tropic of Cancer, but ends up exploring her own sexuality in a sizzling affair. When she meets Henry’s volup- tuous wife, June (Uma Thurman), the inspiration for many of Miller's books, she becomes obsessed. Nin’s sexual dabblings free her creatively and her unaware hus- band, Hugo (Richard E. Grant), falls deeper in love with his unin- hibited wife. Director Philip Kaufman lavishes the film with a dreamlike at- mosphere. Paris of 1931 is a swirl of smoke, cheap wine, all-night dancing and stimulating conversa- tion. Peering through the hazy background are contortionists, magicians and street festivals. SELELED sie. The charac- ters are intelligent and interesting. Maria de Medeiros has remarkably expressive wide-set eyes that rivet our attention and her tiny frame radiates her character’s growing strength. Fred Ward displays Miller’s emotional intensity, weeping openly during a melodramatic movie because the actress reminds him of his absent wife. Uma Thurman is lovely but lacks whatever charisma June possessed to inspire such tears. ’ The film sounds deadly serious, but it has lighter moments. Miller’s first encounter with a souffle at a dinner party has him skimming off the entire top for himself. The parade of eccentrics and unex- pected magic tricks add a much needed shot in the arm to the long talking sequences. Blaze **% (Touchstone Home Video) Rated R Paul Newman plays blustery Earl Long, the colorful governor from the great state of Louisiana whose notorious afiair with stripper Blaze Starr (Lolita Davidovich) threatens to topple his political career. Under the hand of Bull Durham's director, Ron Shelton, the unlikely affair blossoms into a funny, warm romance during Long’s slide from popularity. Newman has a field day in a loud, brash role and Davidovich is sexy and street-smart, but strangely in- nocent and wholesome at the same time. A likeable romantic comedy.
