Meeting addresses
schizophrenia

THE NORTH Shore branch of
the B.C. Friends of
Schizophrenics is holding its first
educational meeting for 1990/91
at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 26
in the Lions Gate Hospital Medi-
cal Day Centre.

Because of advances in treat-
ment with medication and concur-
rent de-institutionalization, people
affected with schizophrenia are
now expected to live in their
communities. This will require an
improved liaison and under-
standing between the disease suf-
ferer, the. family or care-givers,
health professionals, and the

community.

To this end, a team from the
North Shore Mental Health Cen-
tre will be discussing the many
services it offers the community at
present, and will seek input on the
special needs cf schizophrenics
and their care-givers so that it can
adjust its role to respond to these
changing needs.

The B.C. Friends of
Schizophrenics is a voluntary
non-profit organization founded

by friends and families of victims
of this serious brain disorder,
