A NATIVE of Eurasian countries,
the gypsy moth is one of the mest
damaging Icaf-eating insects in the
world,

One mature gypsy moth caterpil-
lar can consume a square foot of
_ foliage every 24 hours and in heavy
infestations trecs can be completely
stripped overnight. The insect's
primary target is the deciduous tree
and successive years of attack can
completely kil a victim.

This pest was intrcduced into
the eastern United States in 1869
and was, until recently, restricted
to the eastern part of North
America.

mass was discovered in the
Taisilano neighborhood of Van-
couver in 1978. To discover other
possible moth locations, traps
baited with sex aitractants
(pheromones) fave becn set out
since that thne and moths have
been found in & number of areas,
including Esauimalt, Colwood,
Chilliwack, Kelowna, Clinton and
Knutsford.

Although sexious defoliativou has
not yet occurred in B.C., the same
cannct be said for the western U.S.
statzs. Infestatiozs in the state of
Cregon,.for instance, reached
