The Ambulance crew wins competition TWO LOCAL B.C. Ambulance Service crew members recently placed first at a regional am- bulance competition held in Chilliwack. News Reporter The B.C. Ambulance Service, Region 2, Pre-Hospital Care Competition was held at Fraser Valley College and tested the skills of approximately 55 ambulance drivers and paramedics working from Hope to Pemberton. The competition judged knowl- edge and skills for the three dif- ferent levels of ambulance care in B.C.: emergency medical assistance (EMA 1D, EMA II and Advanced Life Support (ALS) paramedics. West Vancouver ambulance crew members Bob Pallai and Pete Galdert won in the EMA II cate- gory. The team will compete in the provincial competition, to be held in Vancouver Sept. 8, 9 and 10. The winning team at the provincial level moves on to the national competition in Toronto. The team was required to per- form a complete vehicle check of mechanical and medical equip- ment. While checking the vehicle, team members were quizzed about driving. The team was then informed that an aircraft accident had oc- curred. The scenario had am- bulances on scene and the team was told to stand by for further in- struction. A few minutes later, the team was dispatched to an area a mile from the mock accident. The team _ met with a police officer who said that a couple had been hit by a section of the plane. Said Pallai: ‘‘We found one male unconscious and trapped under an airplane wing. He had sustained injuries to his head, chest, arms and legs. A female nearby, was complaining of chest pain.” The team ascertained that the woman was experiencing a heart attack. Both were treated ai the scene and transported to hospital. The team was also tested in four additional mini-simulations judg- ing the assessment and treatment skills of minor problems. The competition, hosted by the Chilliwack unit of the ambulance service, was the first of what is ex- pected to become an annual eveni.
