they even talk alike.”’ Ar-
noid Schwarzenegger and
Danny Devito? No, of
course not, that was Patty
Duke. But Arnie and Danny
are a wild duet.

Julius (Arnold) and Vernon
(Danny) Benedict are the result of
a ‘50s genetic experiment to
create the perfect male specimen.
Instead, they got non-identical
twins — very non-identical. One
was an intellectual and physical
colossus and the other, well, he
was the leftovers.

Separated at birth, the two grow
up in polar environments. Vernon
is reared in an orphanage, where
he displays his wilfulness through
arson and nun-seduction. Julius’
childhood was one of nurturing
and enlightenment on a tropical
paradise. But both are missing the
alhimportant information of each
other's existence and, for that
matter, their mother’s current
whereabouts.

On his thirty-fifth birthday, Julius
learns of his past and sets out to
find his brother, who is currently
resting up as a guest of the state
(something about 200 unpaid
parking tickets). With an almost
psychic intuition, the eager inno-
cent quickly locates Vernon, bails
him out and then the film follows
them through what press kits like
to call “high-jinks’”’.

The funniest Gits are simple ones
that rely on the stars’ abundant
chemistry. (For instance, Vernon
teaching his virginal sibling how to
waltz.) The film is also visually
funny, with Arnie in a sports coat
and Bermuda shorts, exposing
those unbelievable Popeye calves
or the ludicrous side-by-side com-
parison of Danny and Arnold.

After a promising first half, the
script sputters and we're off on
some predictable chase with low-
lifes after Vernon and five million
dollars up for grabs.

Double your pleasure, see the
first half of the film twice.

Hayley Mills makes her screen
debut in this moody 1959 thriller.
Set in a low-income housing
development, Hayley witnesses
the murder of a manipulating
woman by her quick-tempered
ex-lover (Horst Buchholtz). Sym-
pathetic to the young man, the
10-year-old agreecs to protect him
from the police investigation
spearheaded by her real-life dad,
John Mills. This is an intelligent
cops-in-pursuit story with an in-
gratiating performance by the
young Mills.
