Kelvin says this is common in
Victoria because of the humid en-
vironment and winter temperatures
that are low enough to cause con-

The Hickes have been living in
their home for two years. In the
first year, heating, in addition to

passive solar gain through the
windows, was provided by the
electric baseboards. The total
heating bill for the year was $120.
Kelvin found that after the
house was complete there was a lot
of scrap wood and branches on
their lot, so for the second heating
season he installed a wood stove in
the basement. When heat was re-
quired, they would operate the
stove for two to four hours per
