20 - Friday, October 10, 1986 - North Shore News BUT FOOD CAN’T COMPETE FEPPI’S HAS enjoyed one of the North Shore’s premier seaside locations for the past 22 years. From any of its 115 seats, patrons can view the bustle of Vancouver harbor traffic and the glow of city lights from serene and safe West Vancouver shores. Perhaps the restaurant’s idyllic location has lulled Peppi’s into cu- linary complacency or erhaps management is intent on assuring food dues not compete with view. Whatever the reason, Peppi’s seems content to churn out Italian dishes that are innocuous and average. Most appetizers are about $5, and pastas, which come in seven hopping Timothy Renshaw variations, run from $7.25 to $8.95. The restaurant’s prices are rea- sonable. The most expensive entree is Scampi Al Forno ($15.95). Other entrees range from $11 to $13. From its elegant exterior and matchless locale, Peppi’s might fool the uninitiated into assuming it to be a restaurant of high brow sensibilities, Peppi’s, however, is anything but. Atmosphere, from the ceiling laden with empty Chianti bottles to the red gingham table cloths to pianist Al Carmichael rattling off spirited renditions of Flight of the Bumble Bee, is extremely informal. Food served is plain and, in some cases, a trifle dull. An Antipasto Assortito ($5.25) that my wife and | sampled in- cluded a mound of shredded and marinated carrots, (wo slices of cheese, a wedge of cantaloupe and a large heap of marinated mushroom caps. Unfortunately, the meat selec- tion was a trifle thin with only a single slice of salami and another of proscuitto ham. But, overall, the plate was very pleasant. We followed the antipasto with a Gamberi Alla Marinara (prawns sauteed in tomato sauce for $11.75) and a Scaloppine A Mar- sala (veal in a Marsala wine sauce $12.50). Presentation of both was stark, with eye appeal somewhat dreary. Look at our new Broiler Bar menu and you'll see one classic taste after another.
