Friday, February 12, 1993 - North Shore News ~ 35 Hospital emergency staff give tips for safe skiing LIONS GATE Hospital's Emergency Department sees hundreds of injuries every ski season and over the past decade has seen a change in the number and frequency of accidents. Many iccidents are preventable through better awareness, edica- tion and preparedness. Improve- ments in ski technology (better bindings) have reduced the in- cidence of lower leg fractures, however, knee injuries (twisting) have increased and shoulder and head injuries. continue to be a problem, often due to speed and recklessness. Also, snowboard injuries are increasing. Getting ready for the season safety tips: * Ensure equipment (bindings, brakes, ski edges, poles) are checked for safety by a qualified person. * Assemble clothing which is appropriate for layering (poly- propylene, wool, silk, polar fleece are alf good choices of fabric as they have a “wick-like” action when wet). Cotton and/or polyester are poor choices for next to the skin because once wet, they stay wet. * Mittens are warmer than gloves. * Have a couple pairs of wool socks — 2-3 pairs of wool dress socks are warmer and less bulky than one thick pair. * Winterize your car (ap- . propriate tires, chains, shovel, blanket, flashlight, matches, first aid kit). Getting ready for the day of skiing safety tips: * Listen to and respect weather and road conditions. * Tell family and/or friends your specific ski destination and time you expect to return home. * Take identification with you. * Ski with a buddy(s). * Prearrange a time and place to meet should you become sepa- rated from your buddies. * If lost, tell the lift operator. * If you normally require knee support and/or braces, wear them. * Ensure your head and ears are covered — most body heat is lost through the head. * Start the day with a good breakfast and carry. high-energy foods with you (nuts, raisins, fruit and granola bars). * Carry a plastic whistle so you can summon help if needed (metal can freeze your lips). * Children should wear helmets. * Obtain and carry an area map. * Carry an extra pair of mits and a toque. * Carry sun glasses and/or go3- gles and sun screen, Safety tips while skiing: * Do warm up exercises before starting. * Observe signs and don’t ski out of bounds. . * Be safety conscious on the lifts (do not swing, use safety bars, be prepared to load/unload. * Allow time for meal breaks. Refrain from alcohol as it causes as increase in heat loss and clouds judgment. * Listen to your body — if tired, don’t ski that “last run’ (ac- cidents happen when fired).
