Chairman Margot Furk Minister Dear Editor: © I would very much iike to respond to’ an article in your October 18 edition entitled “Petro-Can takeover a so- cialist nightmare’, as it gives me the opportunity to clarify . some issues raised in the ar- ticle concerning . Petro- Canada’s recent: acquisition of some of Gulf Canada’s downstream assets. ; 1- must. first. emphasize that, with the election of a Progressive Conservative Dear Editor: I would like to correct an impression left by your newspaper. I have never said that this school district is ‘‘catering”’ to any of its students. Venting his fury at the last board meeting, Mr. Stark defends Government, Petro-Canada was given a new mandate to operate in a commercial, private-sector fashion, with emphasis on profitability. Our government ap- pointed a new Board of Directors for Petro-Canada in December, 1984, bringing in new private-sector exper- * tise precisely to ensure that Petro-Canada conducts. its affairs in a prudent, com- mercial fashion. Sue Cook, Candidate, North Vancouver ’ School Board lashed out at the teachers for creating a video program that promotes new educa- tional programs in West Vancouver without first ask- ing his permission. Approval from the chairman of the board was not cnough for Mr. Stark. In this case, teachers have spent much of their own time to entrance takeover damentally « private sector deal, led by Olympia and York and Norcen, the origi- nal purchasers of Gulf Canada Ltd., who then sold the Western refining and marketing portion of Gulf to Petro-Canada. The Gov- ernment of Canada has in- vested no money in the Gulf purchase. Petro-Canada, operating under its new mandate, is financing its purchase entirely through its own equity and commercial bank loans. The government is currently reviewing all Crown corporations in order to determine which corpora- tions still have a public poli- cy purpose. Those which no longer have a public policy tole will’ be sold to private. Petro-Canada is’ investors. part of this review.
