Don't FLORENCE Lacey has no tears for Argentina; it has made her a star. By NANCY WEATHERLEY Lacey plays Eva Peron in Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s hit musical Evita which opened last night at Queen Elizabeth Theatre. The leading lady has had this role for 4 and one half years in 150 cities all over North America. She has played in outdoor stadiums and small theatres but her enthusiasm hasn't waned. “*This is the most exciting part ever written for some- one like me’’ she says of her role, Partly it is the relief of finding a role that is fresh and different from the usual stock musicals of thirty years ago. ‘I’m sort of a younger leading lady. I'm not ready for Mame or Dolly."’ ‘This is someone who ac- tually lived.’’ And the char- acter is not a standard sweet heroine, ‘It takes a lot of my imagination to find posi- tive things about her’? Lacey says Of her real-life role model. ‘‘She has a villainous side (to wer - she’s very human.’’ But Lacey also wishes she could have met the woman who always loved the com- mon people she came from. “She got women the vote and did a jot for Argen- tina.” While focusing on one 926-8922 and Lacey is clearly stage- struck.
