Space Agency (ESA) has
already accepted the
American offer to help build
the space station. Together,
13 Western European coun-
tries will kick in $2.4 billion,
despite the fact that they are
also trying hard to. develop
their own independent space

- program.

long-range dream of making

toward a shuttle service of |

their own. They have agreed
to put $1 billion into the U.S.

space station simply to learn —

how to build one’ for
themselves. :
In the meantime, wisely
avoiding. keeping all their
technical eggs in one orbiting
the Japanese have
shown interest in helping
ESA develop its Ariane
rocket and build a mini-space
shuttle called; Hermes, both
linked_to’ambitious. German;
and Italian plans:to set up a
separate space station.
_ As ‘the European space
program begins to: pay off,
there’ is: much gnashing of
teeth in the U.K., by the way,
because the British once held
the. lead in European space
science. They fell to the posi-

ty exists at the moment. If
Canada. doesn’t seize the
chance. we'll quickly find
ourselves in a position similar
to Britain's.

There are already sugges-
tions being made in Ontario
that if Ottawa can’t see the
wisdom ‘Of: getting on board
the space station, then the
Ontario government . should
fill the vacuum, so to speak.
