FASHION Students opt for old standbys AN OVERWHELMING majority of college students are predicting “clean cut" and ‘athletic’ fash- ion looks on campuses this year, with stonewashed blue jeans, T- shirts with graphics and miniskirts leading the list of *‘in’ clothing ilems. According to a recent report, a national survey of students on 100 campuses, the “punk.*" °°1960s"* and **biker" looks are definitely out, as is the ‘tsurfer'’ look, which remains popular only in the west. For the 50 per cent of all col- lege students who travel to school, there are some significant regional differences in the results of the poll that might prove useful when packing. For example, fanny packs, real- ly low on the list of *‘in’’ items in mos of the country (28 per cent), are still very popular among stu- dents in the west (60 per cent). According to the 1,024 students surveyed, other differences — in- clude: * Leggings on women. most popular in the northeast (56 per cent) are predicted to be out in the west (29 per cent). © Crew cuts on men, while “in” overall, are most popular in’ the northeast (69 per cent) and least popular in the west (49 per cent). e Denim cutoffs only made the Sin’ list due to their strength in the northeast (62 per cent), Denim shorts cuffed at the knee. howes- er, are in’? nationwide (6S per cent). e Popular across the board, miniskirts rank very high in’ the northeast (ST per cent). The survey also highlights gender differences. More women than men favor black colored clothing (75 per cent versus 60 per cent), White button-down | dress shirts (63 per cent versus 52° per cent) and turtlenecks on men (65 per cent versus 57 per cent). Women are much more likely to choose a basic white T-shirt than men (73 per cent versus 86 per cent), and men are slightly more likely to choose a T-shirt) with graphics (80 per cent versus 76 per ceat). And what do students call a re- ally good dresser? “Sharp,” *tcool” and “thot” are the most popular complimentary terms. It is also a plus to be called ‘*slick,” *“*rad,”” “smooth” or ‘*vogue." On the other hand, if someone refers to you as a ‘‘geek,” **slob,” ‘*dweeb,” or **goober,” consider it an indication that your wardrobe might need some work.
