C6 - Wednesday, May 25, 1983 - North Shore News USEFUL GADGETS I'D LOST my con- tinental adaptor plug so I dropped in to Gulliver’s in Park Royal to get a replace- ment. Even though I was in a hurry I manag- ed to spend an hour browsing through a multitude of travel aids. This should be a must-visit for anyone planning an ex- tended vacation. Caution: lf you're a gadget freak, you may come out with far more than you can properly haul along. Here are some of the things that caught my eye (I resisted firmly, though. ) - Travel games. An assort- ment of the popular board and card games reduced toa portable size. Look for Scrabble, chess-checkers, crib, Aggravation and numerous others. Good to pass the time on long flights. - Skinny-Dip Clips. Want to bathe in the nude without alerting the whole beach to your situation? Swim out a ways and doff your suit. Then clip it to this floating device and with luck no freak wave will sweep it out three miles. $8.95. - Portable hammocks. | love lying under a pair of ac- commodating palm trees and this might be the answer. Weighs only a few ounces and folds into a small pouch. $11.95. - Six-spice Shaker. About the size of a yuice glass with a leather top. Could be a god- Travel . wise y Barbara McCreadie send for someone who goes salt-free but wants to add a bit of zip to otherwise bland food. Great for campers and hikers. $6.95. - Trav-A-Belt. Luggage straps, wide and strong at $6.95. Also narrower belts at $4.95 but for two bucks I'd opt for the deluxe ones. - ‘Padded Leather Shoulder Strap.” A _ bit misleading in the name, these are pads to FIT an ex- isting strap and relieve the pain of a heavy bag. Remind me to get one for Bnan next time we go away. He's always shifting his bag from arm to arm to gel some rehef Roads recycled By now, Canadians have all heard of recycled paper, recycled bottles and recycled steel Now an engineer at the University of Waterloo ts pioneering the technology for another recovered product recycled roads “The concept of recycling roads has been around for 50 or 60 years.” says Dr. Ralph Haas The idea was never put into practice because tt was always much cheaper to replace roads But now that oil prides are steep, asphalt (a by product of oi refining) has become cxpensive and recycling has become cost efficient, says Ir Haas WAIKIKI An Only *379 WAIKIKI *479 8 Days 7 Nights An & Hotel LAS VEGAS *285 5 Days, 4 Nights Ai & Hotel RENO $255 5 Days. 4 Nights Ai & Hotel TORONTO Al Only MAPLE LEAF _TRAVEL $239 Recychng a road is done by grinding off the top layer of the pavement, crushing 1t and mixing it) with asphalt new (Canadian Scrence News!) sate trom children ——-— ~ 922.9650 — * Light weight easy to use strong -box © bt asily concealed by coat or sweater ¢ forhome office travel © Keep drags & medicines * Locks onto any closet rend tor store your valuables - Personal Alarms. These range from simpie intruder alarms that fit under a door ($23.95) and omit a shniek if the door is moved to fantastic combination tin- truder alarm, smoke and heat detectors, emergency siren and flashlight. Produc- ed by Omnitronics, they weigh a scant few ounces and are about the size of the tiniest portable radio. I certainly recommend these for anyone who is travelling alone or is the slightest bit nervous in strange places. The onginal cost is quite high - $60 - but the peace of mind that one Security may give you would be - worth the price. Fear of fire is probably more realistic than the worry about being robbed. After all. if you take intelligent precautions and leave your furs and jewels at home, who would bother robbing you? Fire, however, is a threat to all of us. In many hotels the alarms are either non- existant or faulty even if so- meone does attempt to ring them. You've got an edge if you bring your own. If you're the fool who sets himself alight in bed, the smoke detector will warn you. If the fire 1s down the hall, the heat detector should give you some ad- vance notice since the gad- get hangs on the door. - “The Smallest Umbrella in the World.” About the size of half a garlic sausage ring and about the same weight: Ideal for stuffing in the bottom of your purse - $12 Naturally, along’ with many sensible and useful gadgets there are some that only an idiot would buy. My all time favourite in the yunk department was a set of hair curlers thal you immerse in boiling water for a few minutes and (then apply to anywhere °35 Park Royal North, West Van, For skinny dipping and games your cringing scalp. Where, oh where are you going to get a bowlful of boiling water in the early a.m. in the average hotel? And, assum- ing that you should leave all but the roller you're using soaking in the heat, how do you fish the little suckers out of the brew? The packages aren't big - I'd have to buy at least two - and they aren't cheap. $12. Also, another item labell- ed “The Best Purse in the World” was interesting - but not for a traveller. The designer forgot the size of a Canadian passport. Dumb! A number of the items were obviously designed with the gift market in mind. Need a “Panic Pack”? Pro- bably not. From what I could see it was a sample job, containing a bandaid, some Bromo and the like. If I'm about to panic, it will take a lot more than a couple of safety pins and a pill to set things mght. The shop is fun to visit and the staff ‘are knowledgable about their products.
