‘Cave Dwellers’
rate full houses

The fact that there were
some vacant ‘seats at the
opening performances of
“The Cave Dwellers” by
William Saroyan, presented
last weekend by the West
Van Little Theatre, was no
measyre of the enjoyment of
the audience.

Although written over 20
years ago, “The Cave
Dwellers” remains an ex-
cellent satire of the route
civilization is taking and
headed. After five comedies
the West Van Little Theatre
is to be commended for
taking on a drama which
kept the audience in rapt
attention for fear of missing
a single phrase or remark.

The story deals with the
heartfelt happenings of a
group of individual show
business characters holed up
in an old theatre scheduled
for wrecking. The homilies
on life brought out by their
close association and near
starvation went home to the
audience like spear thrusts.

- The quality of the acting
was sustained through five
scenes and still survived the
amateur performance by the
wrecking crew boss and his
help when they demolished
the last'scene by their arrival
to demolish the theatre.

In a play that.took time to
prove an overwhelming
success in New York the
local cast proved well up to
its task. Credits must be
equally shared by the players
— with special mention of

Bill Boone, Phoebe
Cleverley, Bill Finck and
Irene Dundon — and

producer Des Price. The fact
that no cast members at-
tempted to steal the show is
a tribute to Price's discipline
and the teamwork of the
group.

It would be a pity if West
Van theatre lovers allowed a
production of this class to go
half attended.

“The Cave Dwellers” will
be repeated on the next two
Fridays and Saturdays, April
4-5 and 11-12, at West Van
Rec Centre. Curtain time 8
p.m.
