It was the power of sister-
hood in the temporal form of
Eileen Chivers that led the
attack. While the rest of the
group had become bogged
down for a moment among
all the carnage — talking to
sealers and fisheries officers
— Eileen had kept her cool.
Around her = everywhere
were lifeless skinned babies
and = crazéed-out = mothers,
purple wads of gut, the pink
steaming inner stuff spilling
out of twitching harp-seal
pups spht in half on their
backs.

She was (he first of her sex
to come to this place where,
for centuries, Newfoundland
males had centered their
manhood by stecling them-
selves to kill the most

they had ever seen. Eileen
had kept herself centered by
focusing on the ships and the
men with their knives and
hakapiks, their harsh stubbly
faces, their flowing physical
power. Then, ahead, she saw
a seal pup wiggling ftan-
tically.

NOT EVEN RUNNING

A man was crunching
across the ice in its wake,
not oven having to run, yet
coming up on it swiftly, and
the pup's mother’ was
bobbing up and down in a
nearby blowhole, powerless
to answer the desperate
wailing of the infant that was
not long ago safe inside her
Eileen moved at first almost
in a dream state. Then she
caught her first full look at
the pup.

It had turned around and
was snapping at its
destroyer, cven though it
could not hope to reach with
its small teeth any higher
than the man's boots. In that
instant, it was no longer a
seal, but a small defiant boy
with fantastic courage.
Eileen began to run. She
slipped on the ice and failed
on that first try. Not five feet

down and the blood splashed
several feet across the ice
and the seal-boy began his
series of throbbing death
contractions.

The next seal hunter found
himself blocked by a furious
young woman, breathing
harshly and gasping at him:
“Na! No! No!” He elbowed
her aside and her light body
could not resist the rocky
muscles of his arm. But she
was still at his side, crowding
him, tgo close for him to get
a clear swing. It was only
when she slipped again that
he got his chance, and the
hakapik came down again. A
dozen times Eileen fell or
was brushed aside, and a
dozen times pups died
almost within her reach. But
a dozen times she got back
to her feet, scrambling to
block the way again
