endeavor, in ‘The Crime,’ Chapter Nine of James A. Michener’s ‘Centennial,’ on NBC-
TV's ‘The Big Event,’ Sunday, Jan. 21. Brian Keith stars as Dumire, with Anthony
Zerbe, Lois Nettleton and juvenile Doug McKeon portraying the Wendells. While
word of the Wendells’ reputation for cunning reaches Sheriff Dumire moments before
they debark in Centennial, they still manage to fleece the Rev. Holly out of his home
and then take on landbuyer Sorenson, with somewhat complicated results. The plot

evolves into a battle of wits between Dumire and young Philip Wendell, who is torn

between loyalties to his parents, and to his hero, the Sheriff.
