He said shellfish should not be taken from a beach that is closed to shelltish har- vesting. People should harvest at high tide, or as early as pos- sible in the ebbing tide. The bacterium occurs naturally in’ seawater, but multiplies in summer months when water tempera- ture rises. Consumers can reduce the risk of illness by buying shell- fish from sources that process oysters through a federally- registered plant. This will also help avoid paralytic shellfish poisoning, a more serious condition caused by microor- ganisms called dinoflagellates.
