Beverage Stains

Summer is the time for cool
refreshing drinks. These drinks,
such as fruit juices, soft drinks,
beer and cocktails can cause ugly,
brown stains on garments if not
removed. Why? The sugar con-
tained in these beverages is. the
culprit. When sugar remains in the
fabric over a pericd of time, it
caramelizes and turns brown.

The following hints are recom-
mended for the prevention of
these unsightly stains:

1. After the spillage, gently
flush the area with water. Blot,
don't rub. Not advisable on silk as
this process may cause colour
damage. See your drycleaner.

2. Have the garment cleaned
as soon as possible. Do not store
in a warm closet because the heat
can set the stains.

3. Be sure to tell your cleaner
about the stains. Some of these
stains are almost invisible when
dry and your cleaner: may not
notice them.

being held prisoner
inside their own
clothes, trapped by a
stiff assortment of
straps and stays that
made up the contenm-
porary corset.

The evelution of lingeric
from its confining begin-
nings to its present blend of
comfort and style is also a
record of the shitt of atticude
towards independence where
the woman’s opinion mat-
tered more than fashion
designers.

Farid Chenoune’s previ-
ous publication, A History of
Men’s Fashion, explored the
development of male fashion.
This latest work looks
bencath the surface of
women’s fashion. His exami-
nation offers an extensive
collection of articles, quotes,
photographs and illustrations

As women became more
independent, their choice of
lingerie reflected their
changing world.

No longer decorative
objects, their lives becoming
busier, the need for more
versatile garments, which stiil
offered the sensuality of silk,

rayon and nylon.

The creations of Dior in
1947 threatened to return
women to the pedestal they
had abandoned to participate
in the war effort, bur women
would decide to take what

they wanted from the new
designs and with the
strength of their purchasing
power, they moved into the
fifties determined to make
their own choices.

The arrival of Lycra and
the excitement of the "60s
fashions heralded in a new
cra of freedom. Never before
used colours and fabrics
opened new doors, and like
the release from the corset’s
restrictions, once set free
fashion would go it’s own
way.
