sion calied the North Shore a “hub of activity” for recording
studios, managers, entertainment lawyers and CD manufactur-
ers and estimated the area music industry’s net worth to be at
least $8-million.

event and make it bigger and better each year,” said John
Donnelly, festival producer. “It will give North Vancouver

the pacific northwest, from Calgary and Toronto.”

North Shore residents would be admitted to hometown
shows free of charge, with the exception of any “all-ages”
shows, where a minimal ticket price would be charged to cover
any hall rental costs.

“It’s a very positive thing for the arts community and for
the residents of North Vancouver,” said Umeeda Switlow,
music committee chair of the North Shore Arts Commission.
“It will encourage our businesses as well as our pubs and live
music venues to have more live talent and find access to talent.

Coun, Darrell Mussatto ‘expressed concern that the organiz-
ing committee might have its hands full trying to find North
Vancouver venues in which to hold concerts, but Donnelly
assured him that at least 15 city locations had already been
scouted.

Donnelly said that shows could be held at the Avalon Hotel,

The Brit Pub on Lonsdale, the Rusty Gull, Pemberton Hotel
and Lonsdale Quay, among others.

Several councillors also asked whether Nerth Vancouver
musicians would have an opportunity to play some of the
North Shore gigs. Switlo replied that at least half of the per-
formers in any shows would likely be homegrown talent.

“It’s fantastic to see some live bands coming to the North
Shore,” said Coun. Mussatto. “We have a dearth of talent ‘over
here and this will give them a great showcase opportunity.”

An enthused Coun. Craig Keating told his fellow councillors
that he was glad to lend his support to such an event. “I can’t
wait until the next election campaign so I can say that I con-
tributed to the raucous, kickass fun, he said.
