New tests, conducted by’ Underwriter! 8 Pe ‘Laboratories of Canada, in conjunction . with Health Canada, have confirmed that testing methods mect existing standards and thar 100% of the smoke alarms tested passed all reliability testing. In order to ensure the reliabili- ty of your smoke alarms, the Fire Commissioner of BC rec- ommends the following: I. Test and maintain your existing smoke slarms in " accordance with manufac- turer's instructions when -available, or once a month by pushing the test button and listening for the alarm. 2. For battery-operated smoke there have , alarms, batteries should be replaced at leas: once a year. Extended _ life should be replaced in accor- batteries dance with manufacturer's instructions. Batteries should be replaced when the smoke alarm makes a beep- ing sound indicating that the batteries need replacing. . Smoke alarms should be cleaned regularly, at least once every six months, by gently vacuuming the exteri- or. Smoke alarms should be replaced at least every ten years. . When purchasing smoke alarms, ensure chat they have been tested to the CAN/ULC 58531-M_ stan- dard. .Consumers may wish to install a combination of both ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms to provide for optimum protection.
