Catherine Barr Contributing Writer NORTH Vancouver BMX racers want city hall to help them find a new home. Marney McCabe and Steven Edgar head up che North Shore BMX (bicycle motocross} Club. On Sept. 13 they appeared before North Vancouver City Council to ask council to consider building a new BMX track facility. But one of the locations that was being considered was Ke in rejected by council on the basis that neighbours de not want the feilitv nearby. The Loutet Park South area at 7th and Sutherland near Sutherland secondary school, was canvassed to assess neigh- bourhood reaction, According toa staff report, four residents were in’ favour, 112 were opposed and three did not state an opinion. And now, McCabe and Edgar have been sent back to square one. “Pm really tecliny like we are getting rhe political shuf- He,” said McCabe. Both feel that there is more than cnough room for them within the city’s fimity. They said: they do not understand councils decision regarding the Louter Park area when just last month, council rejected the wishes of residents oppos- ing the development of Sunrise Park into a soccer field. Ina letter to city hall of f- cials, Edgar said bicycle motocross is One of the fastest growing sports in’ North America and adapts extremely well to park environments with minimal monetary output, Edgar and McCabe, who WY student numbers decline Catherine Barr Contributing Writer WEST Vancouver’s student enrollment may be down from last year, but the numbers are still good say school board officials. “The decline in enrolment is not an unexpected occur- rence,” said West Vancouver School District 45 sceretary- treasurer Len Archer. “We projected that thar would be happening.” But according to Archer, the number of students attending West Vancouver schools is actually more than predicted. “The good news,” he said, “is that we've exceeded our projected total enrol- ment.” Last year, approximately 6,800 kids made the journey back to school- in West Vancouver. However, this September the numbers are down. A total of 6,711 students have been registered with the district. including 336 in kindergarten; 3,243 in Grades 1 to 7; and 3,125 ia Grades 8 to 12. Among those registered are 200 fee-paying students. A steady decline in enrol- ment has taken place since 1997 when the district start- ing noticing a significant reduction in the number of fee-paying international stu- dents. School officials attribute this in part to fami- lics returning to Asia and possibly to a downturn in the overal} provincial economy. No one age group or grade level shows any signifi- cant decline. IX plans both have children participat- ing in the sport, said that their club hay members ranging in age from three to 61 years. The last North Shore BMX track was closed approximately ming years ago when the gov- ermment removed it trom highway land located behind the Lonsdale | Recreation Centre to build the Lonsdale Overpass.
