LPR RE PM a huge fan of the notion that before any- thing eise matters, you've got to get peo- pie’s attitude in line. Tn my years of working with adults and students in the education field, it has been consistently demonstrat- ed to me that those who exhibit a positive attitude and “can-do” philosophy seem to be both more successful and more happv at whatever they choose to do. T have also come ta recog- nize that while natural tem- peraments with which we are born are powerful factors in attitude development, shifts can take place. Sometimes, a near-death experience will change people’s view of life, but most often, and less rrau- matically, others simply shift their perception of things ovt of a personal desire to change. Stephen Covey calls this a “paradigm shift,” viewing the world from fresh eyes and seeing your own circum- stances from 2 different angle. Asa parent, ! accept that a large part of my role is to help my children find their way in the world. Frankly, much of their way will be found the hard way, through the experiences they choose to participate in and the reac- tions they have to thern. | am a factor but not the only fac- tor. Jusr the same, if I am going to be a factor, then I want to exert my influence in the area where it may have the greatest impact, that is, on their attitudes. I spend a lot of time talking to thera about finding solutions to their con- cerns, taking control of their circumstances and becoming, can-do people. I discourage whining and encourege preb- lem-solving. It works some days and I celebrate those small victories. On the days it doesn’t work, [ simply accept that I may be planung seeds for later. Here’s a cute story to demonstrate the power of a positive attitude. A father with identical twin sons noticed that one always seemed to be positive and the other always seemed to be negative. He decided to try a little test to see how great this difference really was. One day, while the boys were at school, he filled the bedroom of the negative bay with new toys and then had a load of horse manure dumped in the bedroom of the posi- tive boy. When the boys retumed from school, ‘he heard crying coming from one of their bedrooms and when he looked in on the kids’ stuff Seymour Community Services: Weekly parent and child drop-in for 0-5 years. Escape Down Under: Construct an exciting board negative boy, he sw him weeping uncontrollably. “qWhar’s the matter?” he said. “Look at all these great toys!” “Pm never going to get a chance to play with all of these,” the boy replied. “The batteries are all going to run down and my friends are going to resent all the toys I have,” Ar that moment, the father heard shouts of gice coming from the other son's room. He walked down the hallway and opened the door to see his soa jumping about in the manure. h “y at are you so happy about?” dad enquired. “Oh dad,” the boy said, “I just know there’s a pony here somewhere!” A litde change of attitude can make a big difference. In the few weeks before school opens, take the time to plant some positive attinde seeds in your children about school and about life in general. Let’s face i it, we all have a lictle manure in our lives but we'll enjoy it a lot more if we keep looking for the ponies! Graham Hookey is the author of Parenting Is A Team Sport.
