The music is a collection of songs recorded during the making of the group’s - - past seven studio discs. That they didn’t make the cut is not an indication of quality. Junkies fans should be satis- fied if not surprised. Among the surprises: a decent ver- sion of Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter’s To Lay Me Down as well as reverent take of a tradition — The Water Is Wide. Bobbi Smith . Young country star singing | in Lyan Valley North Shore country singer Bobbi Smith is a featured .. performer at this year’s Lynn _ Valley Days on Saturday, May 29. BR kx Lee Perry & The Upsetters — Tir Upsetters Shop V.2 {Heartbeat 1999 11661- 7601-2) The music on this dise — drawn from master tapes — dates from 1968 to 1973 and was recorded at the Upsetter record shop in Kingston, Jamaica. Lee “Scratch” Perry is recog: nized as a non-contorming . trendsetter for his produc- tion work. He has collabo- rated with the Beastie Boys, Bob Marley and Paul McCartney, but it’s the kind of music chronicled here that made him famous for moving beyond ska to define reggae and dub. There’s big energy here, especially from the harmony groups like The Mellotoncs, .The Bleechers and The West Yndians. @ +-: && Dionne Warwick — The Definitive Collection (Arista 1999 07822-19050-2) Warwick’s most enduring material remains a remark- Photo Russell Monk MICHAEL Timmins, Alan Anton, Margo Timmins and Peter Timmins take their lat- est disc beyond retai! and into cyber-space to shift some units. abie string of hits penned by the songwriting team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Beginning with Don’t Make Me Over (1962) and ending with ['l/ Never Fall In Love Again (1969) the singer’s warm, breezy vocal delivery provided the perfect vehicle with which to present the material. alas the magic evaporat- ed when Bacharach and David parted ways in 1972. {ronically she saw her greatest chart successes — two number one hits — with Then Came You, recorded with The Spinners in 1974, and then again in 1985’s That’s What Friends Are For, recorded with Elton John, Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder. While her voice retains its distinctive greatness, the rest of the tracks on this compi- lation simply serve to pro- vide foils for the true power meDAY, X E FIRST TIME EVER } of better crafted songs. Twenty tracks are pre- sented in 20-bit digital glory, using the original master tapes as the source. @ *x*x* Various artists — Lilith Fair, A Celebration of Women in Music Volumes 2 and 3 (Nettwerk 1999 067003013727, 067003013826) Sarah McLachlan’s Lilith Fair juggernaut is by now a massive machine. Juse take a look at the Web site at www.lilithfair.com to get a sense of the scope of the organization, marketing acu- men and political smarts that is powering this affair. These discs offer a taste of some of the performances from last year. High-octane packaging punch aside: there’s only good music and bad music. Simpering silliness a la Sixpence None the Richer, while charting respectably with Kiss Me , just doesn’t cut it when sharing 2 side with an artist as authentic as Emmylou Harris, who appears on this compilation with Deeper Well. The also-rans trv really hard — witness Chantal Kreviazuk’s painful stretch on her hit Surrounded. Because of the broad selection of talent represent- ed, there’s still much to like. Natalie Merchant, Tracy Bonham, Wild Strawberries, Angelique Kidjo, Bonnie Raitt, Holly Cole and Suzanne Vega, Sinead O’Connor and of course Sarah herself, shine. Lilith Fair begins another summer of shows in Vancouver on July 8 ar UBC Thunderbird Stadium with Sarah McLachlan, Sheryl Crow, Deborah Cox, Mya, Luscious Jackson, Bif Naked, Beth Orton, Sixpence None the Richer, Coco Love Alcorn and Maren Ord. xxx Robbie Williams — The Eqo Has Landed (1999 Capitol 7243 497726 2 5) Robbie Williams may be big in Britain but so tar he’s just another blur on the North American music map. The former teen star has had to make himself over atter leaving Take That tor a solo career, The Ene Has Landed (released in Canada earlier this year and in the States on May 4) collects the best material from his ava chart-topping UK CDs Pre Been Expecting You and Life Thru a Lens. Wilfiams wrote most of the songs with Guy Chambers, who also pro- duced the tracks. They sam- ple John Barry’s You Only Live Twice Bond theme for Millennium and reference Rufus’ dad Loudon Wainwrighe HI on Jesus In A Camper Van. The use of James Bond histrionics shows how Williams plans to position himself in the soundscape. He’s going right over the top with equal parts humour and pop pathos, The success of Millennium has shown he can have a go at North America. Asa contender for the hardest working man in show biz title Williams identifies with oldtime entertainers such as Tom Jones and Frank Sinatra. On stage is where he puts everything on the line and next Tuesday, June 1 Williams returns to Vancouver as part of a West Coast mini-tour. He will per- form at the Rage (Tickets $16.50 - 280- #444) before heading off for California and a June 5 TV appearance on the MTV Film Awards tele- cast. — John Goodinan Fountain Bre | Li Cras ; BETTE JULY & AUGUST - SUMMER CAMPS 1999 LOWER MAINLAND BOYS & GIRLS 5-17 The No. 1 soccer school in B.C. is proud to announce their 1999 Sumner Program.
