Andrew NicCredie Automotive Editor andrew@nsnews.com DO your senses tingle at the sound of screaming engines, the smell of burning methane and the sight of streaking carbon fibre? - If so, the Motorsport Emergency & Turnworkers Association (META) is for you. The Vancouver-based orga- nization supplies -track-side workers to Mission Raceway Park and to the Vancouver Indy in downtown Vancouver. Changes to the tracks in both Mission and the Indy cir- cuit will result in both courses being lengthened and turns added, and while these changes will benefit racers and specta- tors, organizers will require Geb, more volunteer track workers to cover the expanded facilities. According to a META spokesman, track worker vol- untecrs perform a number of critical jobs, ranging from flash- ing to communications to emergency response. Mission Park, the Lower Mainland’s only road race facil- ity, is used by the association for training and = racing throughout the season, and new META volunteers receive instruction in all aspects of event operation before they are exposed to the adrenaline pumping excitement of Indy. META trains and organizes volunteers for local and inter- national events, and as an asso- ciation is unique to the world of racing in that it concerns itself only with the on-track safety aspects of racing. As such, the association has gained respect around the world for its active, and unique, approach to providing on-track safety. In addition to the on track excitement, volunteer turn- workers are encouraged to take part in the various META social events that take place through- out the year. Requirements for volun- teering include: @ being prepared to spend extended periods of time on their feet; B working well with others ; B a commitment to at least three weekends during the 1999 season. In return, volunteers have the opportunity to get closer to the action than any ticket would allow, receive META T- shirts, pins and other racing memorabilia, and meet other peuple to share. an interest in motorsport. “It’s a great way to meet Impreza traction impressive From page 29 notice that counts: no wheel spinning in slippery condi- tions, no loss of traction or stability, and no understeer. Then, more power is diverted to the other wheels. The problem with this system is that there can be a momen- tary time-lag in diverting the power from one end to the other, and some systems sound and feel jerky. There can aiso be changes in steering feel as the power transfers from one end to the other. Overall, the TS Sedan offers a good balance of all- AYLORMCTIV 8.C.A.A., ARA, 1C.B.C.
