VANCOUVER VSLIV8 north shore news E & (ZARDEN dreams AUTUMN is bulb- planting time, and the Second West Vancouver Pathfinders, incfud- ing Lise, above, were busy earlier this month planting daffodil bulbs in West Van's Memorial Park. The bulbs were donated by North Shore residents in memory of cancer patients. HOME & G V subtropical [ have visited a great number of gardens over the last 10 years but have seen few that are unique. This past September i was invited to visit the garden of Boh Duncan, who lives near Swarty Bav on Vancouver Isiand. Rven though | knew he was.a “hobby tarmer™ and liked to grow a variety or ten der trait, | was unprepared tor what T saw. The Saanich Peninsula has the mildest climate in Canada and enjoys a relatively low rainfall and higher than aver- age amount of sunshine for the coast. However, f don’t chink of the arca as subtropical. Bob decided, with a littl: help trom plastic, that he could push the limits of what is normally grown in this area to include many of the sub- tropical plants that we nor: mally associate with Mediterranean areas. The first thing we saw as we walked into Bob's back- yard was a 6m x 10n: plastic greenhouse that contained 48 citrus trees laden with matur- ing trot. He had navel and man- darin oranges, tangelos and the largest grapetruit { have ever seen. Planting the trees direetly in the ground rather than in pots gave the roots a free run and stimulated vig- orous growth, All the trees have been chip-gratted on to a hardy orange root stock thar thrives in our cooler soils, Instead of encouraging bees and insects in the green- house, he tries to keep them out to prevent cross-pollina- tion, which results in too many seeds in the fruit. Through careful monitor: ing Bob has found that citrus REMEMBER SHOPPING STONG’S ON THE NORTH SHORE? WELL, YOU CAN AGAIN! How nice it would be to pick oranges for fresh jaice in November or December! Next to the citrus trait area Bob has a dozen or more Kiwi vines trained on a “He has 150 varieties of apples and more than 300 varieties of fruit altogether.” 2 m-high wire trellis. He grows (wo species and plants one male plant to pollinate every four to six female plants. The fruit is picked around the middle of November and hung in wire baskets under the eve on the north side of the house. As Jong as the fruit is kept dry and just above freezing it will last for months. Bob's biggest crop and major activity is propagating and growing fruit trees —- particularly heritage apples. Currently he has 150 varieties of apples and more than 300 varieties of truit altogether. All the apples are grafted on to M9 dwarf root stock and sold as one-year-old whips to be trained by the grower. He is always interest- ed in acquiring new varieties and will custom propagate siting a garden of ghits trees for customers, Vo grow his own mature trees he used the most up to date oblique cordon method. The whips or siigh: stots are planted SA cm apart and Irained at 45 degrees on tour wires strung on eight foot poles. Fach tree is secured tora amboo or re bar support post attached to the wires. Growing the trees at an angle stimulates more trait buds and better truit production. The apple trees will produce truit the second vear and be in tul! production by the third vear. The fruit on the heavily | pruned trees has excellent sun exposure and thus a high sugar content and good colour, Cherrigs, geapes and pears are all grown using similar methods to apples while apri- cots and peaches are trained on the west side of his house. For cherries he has a fifth wire on the poles to hold a net te discourage the birds and raccoons. Bob grows two varieties figs. King, a dessert fig, is a better producer than his ltalian variety. Both are grown as low, free-standing trees. A large free-standing clump of banana plants is wrapped with insulation each winter and he hopes they will fruir the fourth year. To push the limits of what can be grown in southern B.C. Bob is also experiment- ing with hardy varieties of qwocada, fejoa, loquat, orange, paw paw, persimmon, and pomegranate. Planted against a 3 m-high south fae- ing white wall with a 1% metre over-hanging glass roof, he thinks many of the planes can be brought into production if they have “dry feet™ and are hardened off properly before the winter. Based on his scientitic approach and his success so far, fam sure Bob will open up new opportunities for home gardeners in Lotus Land.
