Shore salon owners Layne Christensen Fashion Editor JON Paul Holt has crammed a lifetime of achievement into a career that has lots of life left in it. The 48-year-old hair stylist and owner of AvantGarde, a Yaletown salon, was recognized with a Lifetime Achievement award oats the = Canadian Hairstyling Awards in Toronto Nov, 23. Winning the award was a complete surprise and a huge honor, said the longdme Lynn Valley resident. At the black-tie ceremony in the ballroom of the Westin Harbour Castle, surrounded by 1,200 of his colleagues, Holt sat stunned watching the big screen as highlights of his 32 years in the profession flashed by in words and pictures. “I didn’t actually hear a lot of the stuff they were saying,” said his celebrity clients. He doesn’t remember what he said in the acceptance speech, either. “Fm usually good at the chat,” said Holt, but the experi- ence was overwhelming. “My mind was in a bit of a nwist.” Holt started his career work- ing ina Liverpool salon in "65, earning just $3 a week. He was 16, and after naving spent a summer washing hair ina city salon, he coaxed his parents* blessing to quit) school to apprentice with Perer Collinge. He opened his first salon, Paul Warwick, ac 19 and married Julie, his model and_ co-srvlist, the following year. Before the couple and their son emigrated to Canada in °81, Holt owned a dozen Alan+Paul salons in England with partner Alan Moss. In the past degade, Holt and his team of stylists have raised tens of thou- sands of dollars for charity and pushed the boundaries of cre- ative expression by competing in hair shows around the world. Another top winner atthe Canadian Stvlist of the Year awards was British Properties resident = Robert Andrew Samways, who was recognized with an award for the design of his salon. The Robert Andrew Salon and Spa opened a year ago in the tower lobby of the Hertel Vancouver. The salon’s sleek, modernist esthetic is marked by minimalist details and finetional design. Samways designed the salon in partnership with Neils Bendetsen, who is well known for his clean fines and elegant restraint in furniture design. Samwvays co-owns the salon with James Lee.
