And a pretty good business it is, too. Television — especially American TV — and marketing the five-ring Olympic symbol have filled the IOC's Swiss bask account to the overflowing. : Certainly some of it is used to help develop sport in'emerging coun- tries, but the treasure trove keeps growing. / And so does the cast of staging this elephantine production, prod- ded along as it is by the TV folks. who need more events and Games that run longer to justify the obscene sums they pay the organiz- ing committees in the host coun- tries for the right to air the show. : Despite solemn pre-Olympic promises to the contrary, each host “city tries to top the one before it in grandiose excess. Indeed. the Games have become a monument to excess. Not to mention unhealthy jockstrap nationalism. political power plays and perfor- mance- enhancing drugs. Next year's centenary Olympics in Adanta will have cost about $2 ’ billion when the final curtain comes down. At prices like this there are very few cities in the world that can even contemplate staging such a circus. . . But. many, many cities and nations can afford to host a world “championship in any given sport. ° : The Swedes will have no trouble pulling off the World Track and Field championships: One week, one city, one already-in-place sta- dium and accommodation for no _Mmore that a couple of thousand ath- . letes and officials. All very neat and tidy. .. And, no doubt, : a lot less expen- * sive for spectators: One ticket for one day of track and field viewing © in. a good seat.at Ailanta will cost: U.S. $267. The travel agency must have had 10 pay a pretty good buck, for itis charging a 20% handling fee on top of every tickets face value. And you complain about Ticketmaster?
