Dear Editor:

1 am writing to you to express
my outrage over the attempt to
charge the public for the use of pub-
lic lands and parks in Cypress Bowl
for snowshoeing and_back-country
skiing.

As taxpayers of the province of
British Columbia and the munici-
pality of: West Vancouver, our
money was Spent to put in the road
and to develop the lands for the use
of the people of this province.

The present. lessee, Cypress
Bowl Recreations Ltd., was granted
a lease to put in, and operate ski lifts
and runs.

They have not been given. the
right to full ownership of the whole
of the mountain.

_ They have every right to charge a
fee for the use of their ski lifts and
groomed trails which they maintain.
but they have no right to charge a
fee to anyone: not using their facili-
ties.

Dominating the news today it’s:
Canada’s broke, times are hard, and
expect the toughest budget since the
war.

In the next breath it’s: we are
appointing a new govemor. general
for Canada and-a new lieutenant-
govemor for B.C. .

We are already layered with too
many governments without the per-
petuation of these expensive anti-

tics to enforce that anyone setting
foot on these lands (which are des-
ignated free for the enjoyment of all
the people of this province), pay a
fee to them.

Are they also going to charge a
fee in the summer for hikers to use
the Baden Powell Trail, or for those
in wheelchairs to use the Yew Lake
Path?

The provincial government
should protect the rights of its peo-
ple and immediately bring an
injunction against Cypress Bowl
Recreations.

It should be made clear that they

have simply been given the conces-.

sion to run ski-lifts and trails for

skiing or tobogganing, and that if
they cannot conduct themselves in a -

manner permitting people to use the
public lands of the park their lease
should be cancelled.

crony Paul Watson On He de Ja Madeleine.

Hard to believe this i is the same journalist who used to be so interesting.
