Apply brakes to Alcan's Kemano Il project now An open letter to our provincial and federal governments: It has becoine abundantly clear to me that the federal Libera! and provincial NDP government in B.C, are in bed with Alcan and all three are stonewalling the people of BC. and Canuda by vot allowing the proper environmental examination of this proposed Kemano TH project. How can your rehitively new governments carry on with this fraud against the people, which was initiated by your predecessors? Mr. Mulroney and his fisheries minister Mr. Siddon and their counterparts in B.C. allowed Alcan to proceed without a proper environmental impact study. The puppet conunission set up to decide this matter under the direction of Dr. Strangway of UBC has just continued the fraud. They gave Alcan everything they wanted and the go-ahead to take 85% to 87% of the water out of the Nechako River. The federal scientists that testi- fied at these hearings were pro- grammed by their ministry and told what to say. Even Alcan's sawyers wrote letters suggesting to these same scientists how to answer anticipated questions and how to evade answering others. Many of the scientists that would not prostitute their belief that this project would severely damage or destroy fish. fish habitat and the environment were soon on the out- side looking in. T guess it was just a coincidence that shortly after this decision was handed down by the Strangway Commission, the normally penuri- “OUS“Alcan corporation suddenly became very philanthropic by donating millions of dollars to UBC, the Prince George College. the B.C. fisheries minister's (of that era) pet project and now we hear of | 35% orr | MINI BLINDS aomillion-dotlar donation to Mtr Chretien’s riding im Quebee te build some useless edifice. Could there be a@ connection between the decision on Keniane I and the ongoing offrerat publre stonewalling and these “dos: von?” What are Ute so-catied “bene: fils” of this pragect’ Well, upprospnately eight per- manent jobs would be created. The power generated in a round: about way wok be sold to the Americans through BoC. Hydra and Alene would be exempt from pay- ing any Ges oninitlions aaa millions of dollars every year. Whatare the disadvantages? They are niainy and frightening. Whole runs of wild salmon, mostly spring and sockeye, would be put in dire jeopardy and stand a good chance of becoming extinet. No amotint of money can justily the extinction of any species espe- cially when they are so important to our feud supply. The cartier diversion of some of the Nechako River has alrendy had serious consequences on these fish stocks. This year alone only 30,000 sockeye out of an expected 100,000 made it through the Nechako to the Stuart River system, and only 600 spring salmon arrived to spawn in the Nechako out of an estimated 3,100. The local fish stocks in the Nechako, namely the trout, stur- geon and carp, could be destroyed. Hundreds if not thousands of jobs would probably be Tost in the fish- ing, agriculture and recreation industries. There would be many other detrimental side effects if this pro- posal was to proceed. The worst scenario of all. which to date has not been given any consideration by Alcan or our governments. is THE CONTOUR ADVANTAGE * Serving Wastem Canada Since 1982 * * ¢ Price Protection Pollcy + ¢ Seautiful Fit Guarantes + PLEATED SHADES § * Canachan made © Over 100 faorics tc choose from * Free in-home Consultation « * Contour Lifetime Warranty ° Fast Delivery « West Vancouver 925-3655 “fe a CAULFEILD: | MEDICAL CLINIC Tot sau Coatted \ flaw Shapptonis So entie oP Headlind Gre Wet San VW We fads Hor tie foment Care Chabot Phau (ate SO SP DOLOTINeTIE Het esd Hhalaes te eae Stor fa Soyes Site Sat Phone walt rt todd Pa od ep ake MEDICAL CLINIC Lint 760 Path Kos al shopping Contre, North West Sancouver, iC. ¥7T 19 URGENT CARE & OUT OF HOURS CARE No appatntnient necessary 4 00an 2-00pm daily 7 dave tseek Phone (604) 929-7 490 Bay (OO 415 10 that we tust bitve an answer from our governments te the question, “Whit would the affecr on the Fraser River system: be ah KReatane Th awwas to proceed?” The resulting lower water levets and increased teniperatures in the Fraser could) spell the dooat of dhe other salmon cons on the Fraser. the greatest salmon-producine river in the world.
