Local painter scores big with sports ITH THE Vancouver Canucks having reached the Stanley Cup finals, the bandwagon of loyal Canuck fans has grown to capacity and so has the demand for Canucks mer- chandise. But what about Canucks art? Kevin Gillies SPOTLIGHT FEATURE According to North Vancou- ver artist Glen Green, these are the best of times. ; Green has carved out a niche for himself in the field of sports figure drawing and painting. His studio is home to portaits of Gordie Howe, Steve Yzerman, . Michael Spinks, Jack Nicklaus, Dale Hawerchuk, Paul Henderson, Roger Clemens, Guy Lafleur, Trevor Linden and Dave “Tiger” Williams among others. His latest work is a dual por- trait. of Canuck goalie Kirk McLean — one with his mask up as he drinks from a water bottle and another when he replaces the mask. Green finished the piece in December of 1993 — at a time when the Canucks were strug- gling in the regular season. “We did the McLean piece before the end of the season and, of course everybody hated the Canucks then,” Green recalls. Sales were slow. But since the Canucks’ recent success in the play-offs, things have turned around. The McLean portrait is a limit- ed edition run of only 351 prints, being sold for $299 each, and 35 artist proofs (signed by Green and McLean) that go for $400 each.
