tion house.

by Vivien Leigh in the film Gone
With the Wind.

The man’s military jacket,
Charlie Chaplin’s in The Great
Dictator, was expected to sell for
between $15,000 and $20,000.

The Sound of Music’s Von
Trapp children didn’t get much
wear out of their play clothes in
the mid ’60s movie, and neither
did the dress Julie Andrews wore,
which was a bargain at US$12,650
compared to Leigh’s.

Swashbuckling pirate’s looks are
a hot trend for fall, yet the steep
price of US$31,050 paid for Errol
Flynn's clothes from the movie
Captain Blood seems extravagant.

these consumers aren’t, They are
shrewd investors who know that
clothes can be as valuable an in-
vestment as art, if the right person
slipped them on.

Consider the sale made at the
famed MGM _ auction in 1970
when a pair of red shoes from The
Wizard of Oz sold for US$15,000.
It was an astonishing price at the
time, but in 1988 a second pair of
Dorothy’s red shoes was sold. for
US$165,000 in New York. At that
cost, it is art.

Fashion-as-art is not as limited
as you might think.

Though Vivien Leigh and Judy
Garland wore only a few outfits
for each of the movies they ap-

Western Costume, which origi-
nally made these clothes for studio
designers and then kept them, has
a huge storage facility full of
them.

The pieces auctioned at this
event were chosen among six mil-
lion garments in Western
Costume’s North Hollywood
warehouse.. The reason they are
periodically sold is because the
warehouse cannot afford the
niaintenance and upkeep.
