NVD cross-burning
officially condemned

NORTH VANCOUVER
District Council has finally
passed a motion condemn-
ing the crozs-burning inci-
dent that took place last
November in front of the
North Vancouver home of a
group of Iranian students.

Ald. Pau! Turner, who propos-
ed the motion, acknowledged
council’s ‘‘long-winded ways’’
and. said, “‘we should have passed
this uickly as an emergency mo-
tion.’

The full text of Turner’s motion
reads:

“Whereas the District of North
Vancouver condemns the recent
“‘cross-burning’’ incident that oc-
curred at 2 home in our com-
munity;

VANCOUVER.

DISTRICT COUNCIL

“And whereas council is of the
view that such racially-motivated
incidents have no place on the
North Shore or in any other
municipality;

“And whereas it should be our
common resolve that residents of
our community live in peace and
mutual respect as hatred based on
people’s cultural heritage can only
diminish the well-being of our
community;

“Therefore be it resolved that
the council of the District of
North Vancouver adopt this reso-
lution as a strong statement that
racism has no place in this
municipality and the municipality
will endeavor to promote good
community relations amongst its
residents of different cultural
heritage.”” .
