4 — Sunday, May 23, 1999 - North Shore News Junior he Bob Mackin News Reporter GOODBYE Caps, hello Capitals? A West Vancouver woman is trying to bring the Cowichan Capitals of the elite Junior A B:C. Hockey League (BCHL) ro the North Shore. Tracy Godoy failed in a bid to buy the Powell River Kings last weekend and move them to Lonsdale Arena. Now she has her sights set on the Capitals. If she’s successful, it would fill the gap left by the demise of the Junior B Pacific International Junior Hockey League’s (PIJHL) Nor-Wes Caps. “Godoy said the Duncan- based Capitals are having problems attracting corporate sponsorship. An uncontirmed report in the Cowichan Valley Citisen newspaper said the Capitals lost $30,000 Jast sea- son. Said Godoy, “Your income from a Junior A hockey team, half comes from corporate sponsorship and half comes from fans,” she said. “As far as the fans go, I think the North Vancouver and West Vancouver community — is going to be very supportive of a Junior A team, I think it will be a family atmosphere where people can come on a Friday night, enjoy themselves and watch good hockey.” Godoy was director of operations until this month for the expansion = Burnaby Bulldogs. The 39-year-old for- mer stockbroker said she used to play the game and managed her son’s minor hockey team. Council Meeting Agenda _ Tuesday, May 25, 1999 - 7:00 p.m. _ Saturday 9:00 a.m., Rogers Cable 4 _ 1. Energy Conservation Advisory Committee and Environmental Advisory Committee She said her bid may have one or two partners, including a well-known local hockey per- sonality. She declined to iden- tify the person. An announcement on the fate of Godoy’s bid for the Capitals may come June 2 when sharcholders convene an emergency meeting to consid- er her offer. But she’s already consulting a graphic designer for ideas on names and logos. “It looks very positive now, bur the final word won't come until then.” Godoy said if she’s success- ful, she'll make it a priority to recruit North Shore players. Without a team here, North and West Vancouverites wish- ing to pursue Junior A have to go elsewhere. NHL superstars Brett Hull and Paul Kariya both grew up here, but played for BCHL teams in the Ckanagan. “Pm a big believer in the BCHL and a big believer in kids getting an education and going through the scholarship route,” she said. “If their goal is to make the NHL, the best route is through colleges and scholarships. At least they can get an education if it doesn’t work out for them. “There’s no question, our focus will be on the North Shore as much as we can with- out hurting the team. There's some North Shore players right now in the BCHI. and they’ve had to move off the North Shore to play. There's lots of talent over here and we will capitalize on that as much as we can.” If she fails in her second bid to buy an existing franchise, Godoy said she may apply for an expansion tcam. The BCHL has 14 franchises, four of which are in’ che Lower Mainland. Last Sunday, the PIJHL revoked the Nor-Wes Caps’ franchise from owner Ken Wilson. Wilson owes more than $17,000 to the North Vancouver Recreation Commission for ice rental. The team played at Lonsdale ckey fans waiting for Godoy Arena for one season, “Junior A is quite different from junior B. The reason junior B failed, as far as P'm concerned, is from a market- ing point of view, if you don’t market vour team, you sink,” Godoy said. “You have co get those corporate sponsors and entertain your fans.” | PERSONAL INJURY | Free Initial Consultation Douglas W.
