BRIEFS NV man guilty of attempted murder A NORTH Yancouver man pleaded guilty Feb. 29 in Vancouver county court to a charge of attempted murder. Carl Christopher Joseph, 30, was originally charged in connec- tion with a Dec. 29, 1989 incident at a North Vancouver drinking party in which a 23-year-old North Vancouver man suffered several knife wounds. Joseph will appear March 23 for sentencing. NV man guilty of indecent assault A 66-YEAR-OLD North Vancouver man received a suspended Sentence Feb. 27 in North Vancouver provincial ccurt after he pleaded guilty to a charge arising out of an indecent assault that occurred almost 30 years ago. Michael Edward Downing pleaded guilty to indecently assaulting another male between Jan. 1, 1961 and Dec. 31, 1962. Judge J.L. McCarthy placed Downing on probation for two years and ordered him to undergo psychiatric assessment as directed by his probation officer. : Earthquakes discussed NORTH AND West Vancouver Emergency Program coordinator Ross Peterson is scheduled to address a March 7 dinner meeting of the North Shore Business and Professional Women’s Club on the subject of earthquakes. The meeting is scheduled to get under way at the Avalon Hotel, 1025 Marine Dr., North Vancouver, at 6 p.m. The emergency program is responsible for coordinating the de- velopment of emergency and disaster plans for the three North Shore municipalities. To that end, the emergency program is assisting in the develop- ment of specific plans for schools, health care facilities and the business sector, as well as advising the public on personal home and family preparedness for any type of natural or man-made disasier. NV man jailed for fraud A 70-YEAR-OLD North Vancouver man was sentenced Feb. 22 in Vancouver county court to 92 days in jail and fined $10,000 for charges stemming from an alleged insurance fraud in 1986. Clarence Billett was found guilty on two counts of fraud over $1,000 and one count of misleading a police officer to begin a bur- giary investigation. The former Victoria police officer reported a break-in Oct. 17, 1986 at his Lyan Valley home at 1350 Frederick Rd. to the North Vancouver RCMP. He estimated the value of the missing items at approximately $54,000. Appearing before Judge S.J. Hardinge, Billett was fined $5,000 and sentenced to one day in jail for each count of fraud involving claims to the Canadian Northern Shield Insurance Co. and Co- operators General Insurance Co. Bitlett was sentenced to an additional 90 days in jail for mislead- ing a police investigation. College celebrates Women's Day CAPILANO COLLEGE is opening its doors March 8 for Interna- tional Women’s Day celebrations that wilt include such events as open classrooms and a community forum. Several classrooms will be open to the community, with lectures in anthropology, sociology, English, biology, psychology, and Spanish that will focus on issues relevant to women.
