And quite often being partners can make for some serious fun. The Credit Union helps fund annually a number of sports ieams and activitics in the various communities we serve. In Burnaby, the Burnaby Mountain Mantas Summer Swim Club is one team we support. The non-profit club has been in operation for three years. Approximately 100 swimmers, agefive to 15 are based at ihe Simon Fraser University pool and the Kensington outdoor pou!. The club’s head coach is Rick Gauer, a nationally certified swimming coach. Theclubis one of 300 belonging tothe B.C. Summer Swimming Association. The swim season begins in May, with the kids practising ir the watertwo or three timesa week in May, six times 4 week in June, and twice a day every day in July and August. Ciub executive member Heather Smith has three children in the program, Shannon, 14, and 12-year-old twins Stephanie and Adrienne. Her children have been active in the club for two years. The winning team is one of 33 teams active in the local Sittle league. The teams consist of about 425 boys, girls and teenagers, age five to 18 from the Capilano-Highlands area. Highland’s Litde League Baseball Association vice-president Dan McLaughlin welcomes the corporate community support. “Corporate sponsorship pays for the equipmentand the uniforms,” he said.
