''The whole building is crumbling around us." Dillobough said the new hospi- tal, built on the same property as the old, took 10 years to realize. The toughest job, he said, was securing funds from the provincial government. ‘‘We got caught in a (provincial government) moratorium on construction of new hospitals,’’ he said. Approximately three times the size of the old hospital, the new facility will hold 25 acute care beds compared with 21 in the old, but Dillobough said support services, especially emergency, will be great- ly expanded. “Considering the (perilous Squamish) highway, and the ski- ing, we have our fair share of emergencies, and we had a hard fine dealing with them,"' said Compare Sergers * RICCAR Dillobough ‘We only had oa three bed holding area, and sometimes gat six To cight emergencies al a time. We'd just shuffle them around.” he said- The new facility has twice the holding capacity of the ald haspi- tal, four treatment roams and two operating rooms, which Dillobough said wall camplenrent the hospital's emergency facilities. He said he expects to hire 14 to 1S additional support: staff, bur has only hired one person so far. “We won't be able to (hire more) because we don't have the money yet,’ Dillobough said. He added that he hopes the moncy will be forthcoming from the Ministry of Health by the time the new hospital opens. The new facility is the second phase of a project that began in 1984 when a 38-bed extended-care facility was constructed. Total cost was $10.3 million, which includes $9 milion for the acute care facili- ty. Dillobough said the provincial health ministry contributed 60 per cent af the cost and the region put up the rest.
