Scott plans to keep up the sport for many years to come. .C. ski activity up in BRITISH COLUMBIA’S 1986-87 ski season showed strong growth over the previous season, accor- ding to statistics recently released by Economic Development Minister Grace McCarthy. The British Columbia ski in- dustry recorded a combined total of 2,829,000 skier visits, more than $79 million in gross revenues and anticipates $27.6 million in new capital investment in 1987. These figures include downhill, cross- country and helicopter operations. The number of visits to downhill ski resorts increased 15 per cent over 1985-86, said McCarthy. The increase in visitor numbers -.to ski hills occurred in spite of a shorter. ski season compared with 1985-86. The season was 134 days in length compared with 143 days the previous year. The minister attributed the in- creased activity to better snow conditions than at competing loca- tions and to improved marketing, leading to greater awareness of British Columbia’s attractions. Gross revenves for British Col- umbia’s 21 largest ski areas, which account for 94 per cent of activity, “went up by 29 per cent over the previous season and exceeded $63 ev industry "36 million. Lift revenues increased 25 per cent to $37 million. Heliskiing greater improvement with a 45 per cent increase in skier days and a 54 . per cent increase in revenues. Gross revenues exceeded $15 mil- lion, an average expenditure of $378 each skier day. Commercial cross-country oper- ators reported 109,000 skier visits: and gross revenues of more than $! million. Ski operations contributed to employment growth in the pro- vince with the equivalent of 2,370 full-time jobs reported in the downhill sector, 143 full-time jobs in helicopter skiing and 139 full- time jobs in the cross-country areas.
