The program has been offered by the Canadian Cancer Society locally for the past two years. Spokesman Pauline Garton said last year seven North Shore volun- teeis assisted 15 cancer patients. But, she said, they would like to be able to reach more people. “Cansurmount is needed. Our volunteers have all had cancer and are in the society because they wish they had a program like this when they were first diagnosed,’’ she said. Garton said the group tries to match volunteers with appropriate patients. For instance if a person has cancer of the colon she said a volunteer who has also suffered from this type of cancer would be called. Volunteers are there to befriend the newly diagnosed cancer pa- tient, answering any questions that person may be having. Garton stressed volunteers are not there to offer medical advice. “The volunteers are there to listen,”’ she explained. ‘‘We like to deal with the newly diagnosed people, because that’s when you're overwhelmed with this disease and you're scared. The volunteer is there to say, ‘Don’t give up. I'm here and life does carry on.’ " Garton said all of the volunteers go through an extensive training program, She said people come to Can- surmount either by a referral from their doctor or social worker, or come on their own. She said volunteers meet with the patient usually two or three times, depending on the need, and usually at the cancer patient's home. ‘*When they're still in the hospi- tal they’re usually not ready yet to talk to people,”’ said Garton. To find out more about the local program interested persons can contact the Canadian Cancer Society, based in Vancouver.
