Liberal in a blue suit N A COUPLE OF DAYS we’ll know who’s go- ing to be the next MP for Capilano, because there’s no doubt that whoever gets the Tory nomination gets the job. The constituency would no more go back to being Liberal than it would vote for the Ayatollah. But when the federal elec- tion comes it will be an unen- thusiastic stamp of approval that goes to the successful nominee. That’s because Mulroney has blown it. So much so that its difficult to understand why Mary Collins bothers to get a letter of approval from the guy, or why Mac Camp- bell thinks he’s doing himself any good by having his pic- ture taken with him. Rod Clark is clever to stay away from such nonsense. What 1s needed, you see, is a Tory, not a Liberal in a blue suit, which 1s what Mulroney 1s. - English Canada calls out for a champion, not just a guy with a good denust. John Turner’s chosen role is to persuade the country that the Liberal Party never existed. And he may just pull it off, the voters in Ontario being so dumb. If he does, it will be because the Tory par- ty 1s scared stuff of being Tory. That was why Joe Wimp failed. But judging by Turner’s initial performance in Manitoba, when he said that the provinces would set the pace in language matters, Turner’s more of a Tory than Mulroney will ever be. On that famous occasion, Mulroney put sacks over the heads of his Manitoba MPs, lest they said what the EE mailbox |>\<| Witness did not ‘act responsibly’ Dear Editor | feel | must comment on your ‘‘Letter of the Day" in your issue of June 13th, in which Mr. R.L. LOST DIRECTION An interesting example of the frustration felt by real Tomes is seen in the May issue of Overview, the newsletter put out by the Na- tional Citizens Coalition. Richard P. Robarts, of Windsor, Ont., had written to David Angus, Chairman of the PC Canada Fund, and Overview reprinted what he had to say. Here is part of it: “It continues to be very hard for me to contribute to the party when it appears that the Conservatives have lost their conservativeness. “‘l remain puzzled as to how the country became French, metric, and soctalhiz- ed to the tune of over 400 Crown corporations — many of which would give my unil- ingual daughters a hard time if they apphed for a job Consequently, three of my seven children are now in the United States, seeking their education and eventual jobs and no doubt spouses. “‘This certainly was not our plan for them .... my children being eighth genera- tion Canadian and of United Empire Loyalist descent to boot. But how can we argue against them when we see what 18 happening in Canada? \t seems that we Conservatives have lost our sense of direction.”’ UT OF TOUCH ! use this stuff only to show you that Collins is not alone in his ravings, and to demonstrate that the mainstream press 1S just as much out of touch with what people are thinking as the hopeless Mulroney is. Here is another excerpt from Overview: “Mr. Mulroney shows no sign of recognizing the need for change. His calls for cut- ting the deficit and the debt are no more imaginative than his opponent's. His appoint- ment of Flora MacDonald as vice-chairman of the party’s inner cabinet, and of David Crombie to replace retiring Treasury Board critic Ron Huntington, stamp the party as being no more conser- vative than the Liberals. His courting of the Quebec vote commits him to the same strategy as the Liberals: transferring funds to that Province, respecting 115 autonomy in matters of social spending, education, immigration and language, and expanding the use of French elsewhere.”’ If you still don't belheve that Mulroney’s a Liberal in a blue suit, take a look at the polls Do it yourself and save 35% until July 1st “Bring In -your closet & door opening measurements and save 35% on Our closet organizers and mirror doors by installing them: yourselves.
