Of the three North Shore municipalities, West Van has consistently been the most progressive in its support of recycling. It was the only municipality to have a multi- material recychnag contract in effect with New Life Recychng. which collected newspaper, giass and metal from homes where residents bothered to separate their garbage. The company died a few months ago due to the plummeting price paid overseas for newsprint and the refusal of the North Van municipalities to subsidize the program until such time as the market picked up. That market upturn happened a couple of months ago and though it was too late to save New Life it meant that MacLean, a former New Life employee could start his own com- pany, which is already operating at a profit. MacLean hopes the North Van councils may have learned something about the realities of recycling through the recent collapse of their programs in their cnthusiasm to get recycling operating at no cost of even at a profit. As was the case with former New Life president Bruce Culver, MacLean would like to see a com- prehensive North Shore- wide recycling program in operation. Now the problems of the controversial Premicr Street landfill reaching its capacity have virtually reached crisis level, Maclean hopes that North Vao District. which supports the concept of recycling, may actively do something to support tt as a reality.
