Suddenly, overnight, it seems the older person is alone, cut off from those he knew. Then our older citizen may feel out of place as he no longer fits into the life of the younger people around him. If he gets sick, he finds ‘that he can no longer carry out the most routine func- tions. He may be per- manently impaired in some physical way for the rest of his life. He finds that he must now depend largely on other persons for all the things he used to do for himself. ‘No person likes the thought of being dependent upon others for the basics of life, yet it is a tragic fact of life. As the number of older, dependent people increase, the need for understanding, loving and compassionate people needed to grow too — persons who can see the need of our older citizens and respond in a caring way to that need. New life and new hope can come through a_ caring relationship. This fall, a five-week orientation training for such volunteers is being offered. The orientation will be held on Wednesdays in the ‘Boardroom, Evergreen House, from 7:00 to 9:00 p-m. The dates are Sep- tember 29, October 6, 13, 20 and 27. Volunteers wishing to take part in these exciting and stimulating sessions should phone Rev. Merle Snustead, Chaplain of Lions Gate Hospital at 988-3131, Local 441, or Social Worker, Ofelia Buluran at Local 470.
