Library declares book fine amnesty

Have you ever reserved a
book at the public library
and then had to wait months
for it, even though the
library assures you that you
are next on the list?

Have you checked the
shelves week after week for
the next book in a series that
you are hooked on?

If this sounds like a
familiar story, you are
probably the victim of Public
Library Enemy No. 1: the
Long Overdue Borrower.

Delinquency in returning
books causes great frustra-
tion to would-be borrowers,
and real headaches for
library staff: getting back
overdue books ic time-con-
suming, nerve-wracking,
and often almost impossible.
Because of the increasing
costs in postage and staff
time involved in sending
overdue notices, North Van-
couver District Library is
obliged to raise its schedule
of fines for overdue books,
effective Monday April 26.

The new fines will be 10 Library books retumed to
cents per day per item for all the Lynn Valley, Capilano or

adult library materials and
all records, and 2 cents per
day for all juvenile materials
except records. Maximum
fines will also be raised.

As an additional incentive
to return those long overdue
books, the library is
declaring an Amnesty Week
from Saturday, April 17, to
Saturday, April 24, in-
clusive.

Friday and Saturday, April
16-17, at major North Shore
shopping centres.

The tickets for the May 8
event will be available in the
north and south malls of
Park Royal, and in Capilano
and Westlynn Malls from
10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday
and from 10:30 a.m. to 4
p.m. Saturday.

Price ts $20 per ticket ($15
for senior citizens), in-
cluding buffet dinner with
wine, dancing to Mart
Kenny and his orchestra and
many valuable prizes.

The ball takes place in the
McDougall Hall on 23rd
Street, North Van, one block
east of the Centennial
Theatre.

In honor of the occasion
the hall is being transformed
into a_ glittering = crystal
palace under the direction of
noted set designer Gail
McCance and well-known
North Shore artist
Meek.

A highlight of the evening
will be the unveiling of the
City’s new coat of arms.

Ruth:

Dress will be semi-formal

and those attending are also’

encouraged to come in the
period costume of 1907.
There will be judging and a
prize for the best costumes.

The ball kicks off a full
week of celebrations around
the City’s official 75th
birthday — Thursday, May
13.
