By ANNE-MARIE LAWRENCE NEXT TIME you ask a North Shore ‘Faxi driver to step on the gas you may discover that it is propane not gasoline, North Shore Taxi Ltd. is not taking chances on escalating gasoline prices; the company has become a propane convert. > 7 The taxi operation involves 46 owners with a fleet of 81 vehicles. Since the spring of 1981, 25 per cent of the fleet has been converted to propane fuel. The remaining vehicles will have been converted by the fall of 1982. The cost of conversion after a federal government grant of $400 is ap- proximately $1500. However a spokesman for North Shore Taxi said that they have not yet received: any financial aid as the govern- ment has been slow to respond to their request for application forms for the grant. North Shore Taxi’s own automotive shop is responsible for the con- versions. They are the first taxicab service in the greater Vancouver area to use propane although others are now in the process of converting. NORTH SHORE Taxi coordinator, Don Bell, stands alongside propane powered taxi. Visible in the trunk is the propane tank which holds the equivalent to a 25 gallon gas tank. The fuel in it, if processed would produce only nine gallons of gas. (Terry Peters photo) Vol. 1 Dec 2/81 Snow! Beautiful snow! (rouse and .vymour look = so “autiful with their 1OW Caps On. Because their own gas pumps have not yet been changed over, the propane cabs fuel up at a local service station with a propane pump.
