A22 - Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1981 - North Shore News There is help for smokers North Shore smokers who want to “kick” the smoking habit, but lack the willpower to do it on their own, can now get help, at a low cost and with group support. The Ex-Smokers’ Association has developed a new yuit program to help desperate smokers become relaxed non-smokers. The six week course is being presented at the North Shore Family YMCA, 1735 Inglewood, West Vancouver on Thursday, September 10, (7:30 p.m.) The North Vancouver location is St. John’s Anglican, 220 W. &th St. on Monday September 14. (7:30 p.m.) Classes are also scheduled to start in about 20 other Lower Mainland communities during September. Martin Thompson, a former smoker, and spokesman for the association says the key to their progrm 1s careful at- tention to the individual through all the phases of the quitting process. “Most smokers want to quit,” says Thompson, but just can't face the agony of withdrawal. Others find it easy to quit, but can't stay off for very long.” He says the association program 1s unique in that it puts as much emphasis on long term follow-up and maintenance as it does on the initial quilting process. To start, the smokers meet, in a group, once a week in the evening, for six consecutive weeks. In this phase the quitting process takes place. and = main- tenance techniques are learned. Group leaders are former smokers who have been given special training io deal with the problems encountered by most quitting smokers. Group size Fight over diary MADISON. After the group finishes, each successful member is put on a follow-up program which includes letters, phone calls and so on. The follow-up continues for one year from the date of quitting smoking. “It’s one thing to quit smoking...,” says Thompson, “... but quite another to stay off. The accepted yardstick for success is one year of ab- sumence!” Cost of the program is $63. “The average smoker spends that much and more on smoking over the same period of time (Six weeks) Our mandate as a non-profit association is to spend every cent taken in fees = on developing our smoking cessation and education programs,” said Thompson. “Our aim is to have a program in every town and city in the province of B.C.” Thompson, himself an ex- smoker, quit five years ago. “Il once believed I would never quit. That made me very depressed, but | finally did. Now | still get an urge once in a while, but it’s not very serious” he said. “I don't get upset about it.” One man who didn't want his name used, smoked 30 cigarettes a day when he entered the program. Within two weeks he was down to 10 and he quit in the third. “You have to be motivated. Sixty three dollars is not much in comparison to the cost of smoking. but I still wanted to get my money's worth,” he said. “T just couldn't quit on my own.
