Lonsdale. But the boys and - girls are not limited to local ‘Corps training.’ They par- ticipate -in many. national programs, including a . Summer exchange program ‘to. Europe and the United States. . So . ‘Each year, more than 5000 Sea Cadets from across Canada spend part of their summer at H.M.C.S. Quadra . near Comox,-B.C. or similar Cadet Training. Establish- _ ments across Canada. “The summer program ended.a couple of weeks ago at H.M.C.S. Quadra and I was fortunate to be part of the last days activities. Captain Lawson, skipper of the only Canadian Sail Training ship for Sea Cadets, the 72’ Ketch ‘Rainbow’, invited me aboard to sail the - ship to its winter berth in Esquimalt, (Victoria)! The activity at the training Sight was enormous. Hundreds of young boys and girls were buzzing up and down the docks with bright | red lifejackets around their shoulders. Their morning exercise consisted of a sail-row competition around a three mile course. They jumped into 20° whalers, who had a gaff rigged mainsail and a tiny missensail. But instead of hoisting the sail, each cadet grabbed a paddle and waited for the whistle. Five whalers with 12 cadets in each boat raced across the bay with sur- prising speed. When they reached the first marker, the paddles were stowed away and the sails hoisted. At the second marker the sails were dowsed in a hurry and 8’ oars were pushed over the rail. Loud rhythm commands of the boatsmen kept the oars at the right beat tuntil they reached the finish line. The victory songs lasted another half an hour before training continued, Captain Lawson explained to me that he takes‘each day 12 cadets aboard ‘Rainbow’. They have a chance to practice at first hand coastal ‘navigation, proper Sea- manship and learn to sail a large vessel. in just 10 Easy 3 hows classes North Shore Sailing School Ltd. 1601 Granville 5¢., Vencevver Tol, 669-0840 verted 12 metre racing sloop, built in the late 30’s. Difficulties occur very. seldom, but foreign cadets give me once in a. while a headache”, mused Captain Lawson.
